BRITAIN FALLING – Four weeks of dark UK cinema: Trainspotting

Description

TicTic, Phnom Penh Kicking off a month of British cinema at its darkest, and funniest. Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his mates are heroin addicts in Edinburgh: Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller) with his Sean Connery theories, the hopeless, lovable Spud (Ewen Bremner), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle), who doesn't do drugs but is far more dangerous than any of them. Renton keeps trying to get clean. His friends keep dragging him back. Then one big deal offers a way out, if he's willing to screw everyone over. Danny Boyle made it for £1.5 million from Irvine Welsh's novel, and it went off like a bomb. John Hodge's script won the BAFTA and got an Oscar nomination, the BFI later ranked it among the ten greatest British films of the century, and the soundtrack, with Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" and Underworld's "Born Slippy", defined 1996. It turns 30 this year. The "worst toilet in Scotland" scene still makes people physically recoil. "Trainspotting is supercharged with sulphurous humour and brutal recklessness." – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian "Exuberant and pitiless, profane yet eloquent." – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Free Entry & Popcorn – Arrive early for sofa, bed, or beanbag seating.
